Inbound Exchange Students

The exchange students studying in our partner universities can apply to study at College of Music, Mahidol University (MSMU) for a semester or a year and transfer credits to their home universities. In order to apply to the exchange program, you should contact the International Relations Office or relevant unit of your home university for more information.

To be an exchange student, applicants must be officially nominated by their home universities and pay the tuition fee at their home universities.

Full-time Enrollment Requirement

Inbound exchange students are required to take at least 9 credit hours per semester in order to be eligible for full-time student status and cannot take more than 22 credit hours for undergraduate students and 15 credit hours for graduate students.

Course Registration

The International Relations Unit coordinators of the host university send the course offerings and course description to the inbound exchange students. The inbound exchange students can also review the courses list at https://callforexchange.mahidol.ac.th/inbound.

The inbound exchange students are required to submit a course registration request form with a list of selected courses to the International Relations Unit before the deadline. We highly recommend that the inbound exchange students should find the course equivalency from a home university prior to their departure.

Qualifications

Applicants must currently be enrolled in at least the second semester of the home university program.

Applicants must fulfill the following GPA requirement.

  • Undergraduate: 2.5/4.0
  • Graduate: 2.75/4.0

English Proficiency Requirements

A non-English native speaker should provide one of the following tests:

  • TOEFL (IBT): 64 or above
  • IELTS: 5.0 or above

*Language proficiency tests must be taken within the last two years.

**English language proficiency scores could be waived or superseded by a home university’s certifying letter stating that a student’s English proficiency is in a level of practical communication.

Requirements

  • One of passport-size photos (attached photo included)
  • An official transcript (record of completed courses and grades) from your home university 
  • A copy of the first page of the applicant’s passport (information page)
  • An English proficiency score record
  • A letter of recommendation stating your performance while studying at your home university
  • Performance videos: no more than 30 mins (CD/VCD/DVD/YouTube Links) of performance all together

Application Process

STEP: 1Inbound exchange students are nominated by their home universities, specifically indicating exchange semester periods, instrument, E-mail.
STEP: 2The International Relations Unit sends an E-mail to inbound exchange students to confirm their nominations, including instructions for required documents fulfilled.
STEP: 3Inbound exchange students complete the application by the deadline.
STEP: 4The International Relations Unit issues the letter of acceptance to inbound exchange students for visa application and to their home universities’ coordinator for reference.
STEP: 5A welcome orientation is held approximately a week before the semester begins. It is hence recommended that the inbound exchange students arrive in Thailand a few days ahead of the orientation schedule.

Visa & Immigration

Visa Application

To obtain your student visa (Non-Immigrant/Non-ED), we strongly encourage you to arrange your student visa application prior to your departure for Thailand. You are eligible to apply for a student visa at the nearest Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate in your home country. 

Requirements for the Student Visa Application to Thailand:

  • Visa application form (available at the Royal Thai Embassy/ Royal Thai Consulate-General in your home country website)
  • Visa fee (please check for the update of visa fee at the Royal Thai Embassy/ Royal Thai Consulate-General in your home country website)
  • Two recent passport sized photographs
  • Evidence of sufficient funds as is required by the Immigration/Consular unit at the Royal Thai Embassy/ Royal Thai Consulate-General in your home country

It is not recommended to travel to Thailand on a tourist visa. However, in case you encounter an emergency or any unforeseeable circumstances, you can apply for the tourist visa, for up to 90 days, at the aforementioned Thailand’s government agency. Alternatively, you can obtain the tourist visa upon arrival with a maximum of stay for up to 90 days subject to immigration agreement between Thailand and your home country.

Visa Extension

Your legal period of stay in Thailand can be extended (beyond the first 90 days) by at least two ways:

1. With a single entry visa or a multiple-entry visa, you must apply for an extension of your stay at the Immigration Bureau by submitting the following document.

  • Application Form for Extension of Temporary Stay in the Kingdom 7 (TM.7)
  • Form for Alien to Notify of Staying Longer
  • Copy of passport
  • A photograph (4 cm. X 6 cm.)
  • 1,900 THB application fee
  • An official document from the Dean of College of Music (issued by International Relations Unit)

2. With a multiple entry visa, you can alternatively prolong your stay by leaving and later returning to the country before each 90-day period is over.

Students should notify the International Relations Unit at least 3 weeks before the expiry date to allow enough time to prepare the documents and procure the authorized signatures. The visa extension must be submitted in person at the Immigration Bureau.

Note: After arriving in Bangkok, please bring your passport to the International Relations Unit. We will keep a copy of your passport and visa so to remind you of the important dates of visa renewal before the end of the 90 day period

Re-entry Permit

Students holding a single-entry visa who wish to travel outside of Thailand for a short period during their studies need to apply for a single or multiple re-entry permit before departure at the Immigration Bureau.

List of Required Documents:

  • A completed TM-8 form (available at International Relations Unit)
  • A recent 2 x 2-inch photograph
  • A copy of your passport (main page, visa page and entry stamp)
  • A 1,000 THB (around US$ 33) application fee for a single entry and a 3,800 Thai baht (around US$ 127) one for multiple entries.

Note: The re-entry permit does not prolong your visa or permit to stay. It is just a permit to be able to return to Thailand. If you do not obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand, your visa will no longer be valid, and you will need to apply for a new visa.

Scholarship

Scholarship for Accommodation for Exchange Students

Mahidol University shall allocate the Scholarship for students who have been accepted to study Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as an exchange student at the College of Music, Mahidol University. Scholarship recipients will be granted a daily or a monthly accommodation costs. Details on the allocation as follows:

How do I apply for the exchange program at the MSMU?

You must be officially nominated by their home universities and pay the tuition fee at their home universities. You will receive the application process email from the IR office and are required to complete that application as an exchange student by the deadline.

When does the exchange term period start and end?

There are two regular semester for the exchange program

  • First semester: June – September
  • Second semester: November – February

When is the deadline for applying to the exchange program at MSMU?

All application required documents must be submitted before the deadline below:

  • First semester: March 1
  • Second semester: July 31

When will inbound exchange students receive the letter of acceptance?

Once MSMU has received the application, it will be forwarded to the department that students are applying to. The admission procedure takes around three weeks after the stated deadline. When final acceptance is confirmed, students will receive a notification with the necessary information for their arrival, including the official letter of acceptance and visa application.

What are the English language requirements for applying to the exchange program at MSMU?

It is suggested that inbound exchange students arrive approximately one week before each semester begins. The departure date back to their home universities should be only one day after the date of the last final examination.

What kind of visa should inbound exchange students apply for?

Inbound exchange students have to obtain the Non-Immigrant/Non-ED visa which allows them to study at the MSMU. They should apply for a student visa at the nearest Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate in their home countries.

What is an appropriate budget for inbound exchange students to prepare for living in Thailand?

How can inbound exchange students choose housing?

MSMU does not offer on-campus accommodation. Inbound exchange students can find a wide selection of apartments with different rent rates and facilities. There are many private apartments located nearby the campus where public transportation is accessible, and most private apartments provide a shuttle van service to the campus, free of charge.

Should inbound exchange students have health insurance?

All inbound exchange students should secure an international insurance prior to their arrival in Thailand. The insurance should cover the duration of time they are staying in Thailand and provide a wide range of medical / accidental coverage as well as general medical coverage for outpatient and inpatient services.

How many course credits are inbound exchange students required to take at MSMU?

Where can I buy my uniform?

For undergraduate students, they are required to wear a student uniform. The uniform can be purchased upon arrival at the uniform shops which are located opposite the campus.

Outbound Exchange Students

All College of Music students are encouraged to study abroad at partner universities. The program offers students to go on exchange for a semester or one academic year and receive credit towards their degree at College of Music. Students who wish to participate in the exchange program are highly recommended to make a decision about the desired university and the course of study with their departmental advisor before applying.

The College of Music recruits students who are in pursuit of international learning and bridging the gaps between cultures twice a year in December (1st Round) and June (2nd Round).

  • Students in all majors and programs are eligible. (Some universities may have restrictions.)

  • Be able to communicate in English academically and in daily conversation
  • Be able to learn and share knowledge and experience in a cross-cultural environment
  • Be able to represent and maintain the reputation of College of Music, Mahidol University

Requirements

Applicants must receive the required minimum score on one of the two following English proficiency test:

  • TOEFL IBT 79 or above
  • IELTS 6.0 or above
  • Others (KLAT, TOPIK, JLPT) *It depends on the requirements of the host university.

Note: Language proficiency tests must be taken within the last 2 years.

Application Calendar

Application Process

STEP: 1Students complete an online application and submission of required documents before the deadline.
STEP: 2The International Relations Unit reviews the application and announces a list of candidates for the interview process.
STEP: 3Selection result announcement
STEP: 4The International Relations Unit nominates the selected students by email or online nomination to the Partner University with some basic information.
STEP: 5Students will receive the application process email from the Partner University and are required to complete that university’s application as an exchange student ON TIME.
STEP: 6The letter of acceptance and documents for visa application will be sent directly to the student’s email address and to the home university coordinator approximately 4-6 weeks after the Partner University’s application deadline.
STEP: 7Students shall inform the International Relations Unit about the dates of arrival and departure.

Terms and conditions

During Your Exchange

  • Students are expected to be full-time students at the host university.
  • Attend “Orientation” at the host university (compulsory).
  • Send “Course Registration Report” to confirm your course registration within 2 weeks after the semester starts.
  • Before returning home, make arrangements to have your Official Transcript (in English) from the host university and ask the partner university coordinator to send it directly to the International Relations Unit.

After Your Exchange

  • For those who wish to transfer the credits earned at the host university, need to contact the International Relations Unit within 2 weeks after the program is finished.
  • Write the exchange report (Testimonial) to share your exchange experiences with your friends and junior students. 

Course and Grade Equivalency

Transferring credits shall be in accordance with the following requirements and conditions:

  • Students must complete sufficient credits while on exchange at the partner universities.
  • Most credits earned at the host university will be eligible to transfer to the College of Music if the “Course Equivalency Request Form” was completed correctly and a passing grade was earned.
  • Grades earned must be equivalent to MS grade “C” (or better).
  • Course equivalency in terms of course contact and workload will need to be approved by the program committees at the home university.
  • The results of your study abroad should be recorded in your College of Music transcript.
  • After having studied at the host university, students must complete at least one regular term at the College of Music, Mahidol University prior to graduation.

Credit Transfer Procedure

Finances

The budget varies widely, depending upon costs of living in each particular country and personal preferences. The estimated budget of 300,000 – 400,000 Baht per semester. This excludes a regular tuition fee that each outbound exchange student needs to pay.

  • For tuition and fees at the host university, students will pay their normal MSMU’s tuition.
  • Students will be responsible for their own personal expenses, including flight tickets, travel documents (Passport & Visa), food, accommodation, medical care, insurance and any other costs.

Scholarship

Scholarship for Undergraduate/Postgraduate Student Mobility Program

Mahidol University shall allocate the Partial Scholarship for students who have been accepted to participate in the academic activities/exchange program at the educational institutions in foreign countries or online study. Mahidol University provides a lump sum payment which covers round-trip airfare, accommodation costs, meals, visa application fee, health insurance, and other expenses.

Are there any scholarships available for outbound exchange students?

Please visit our website on partner universities. However, each partner university will offer different seat quotas to MSMU in order to maintain an exchange balance record.

How many credits are the outbound exchange students required to transfer back to MSMU?

MSMU does not require the minimum credits that the outbound exchange students have to transfer back to the home university. However, all outbound exchange students must complete sufficient credits while on exchange at the partner universities.

Do the outbound exchange students need to pay the tuition fees at the Host University?

Students will pay the normal tuition and fees at the MSMU for the period of the exchange. The host university will waive tuition and fees for the visiting exchange students, unless the other administration fees required by the host university.

How can the outbound exchange students get the accommodation?

The host university will either arrange in-campus accommodations or provide support to help students find their own accommodation.
