The Jean-Marie LONDEIX International Saxophone Competition is recognized as one of the most important and prestigious musical competitions in the world. The first competition was held in Bordeaux, France in 1996. The competition later found its home at the College of Music, Mahidol University, Thailand. Every three years saxophonists from all over the world gather on the campus to compete for the top prizes, but also to develop and share their friendship and to learn from each other and from the members of the international jury, presided over by legendary saxophonist and teacher Jean-Marie LONDEIX.
Our objectives are to create and support original music for the saxophone, motivate the next generation of saxophonists to engage in higher levels of musical expression and to discover the next generation of talented saxophonists who artistically present significant music and perform on all instrumental members of the saxophone family. As well, we aim to encourage Thai saxophonists to better understand the substantial works of music from western countries and encourage western saxophonists to explore and share skills with Thai saxophonists through artistic presentations. We also strive to provide the next generation of performers international experiences that will enable them to reach creative and universal levels of artistry through sharing the vast, diverse and original repertoire of the saxophone's musical heritage. We strive to help Thailand engage on the world's musical stage through its support of new music of saxophone.
Since his first meeting with Professor Dr Sugree CHORENSOOK, Dean of the College of Music, Mahidol University, Maestro Londeix was impressed by the courageousness of Thai musicians and other performers from around the world who have shown their willingness to engage in the performance of virtuosic forms of music originally written for saxophone. Maestro Londeix willingly and confidently supports Mahidol University and agrees that they host the competition named in honour of his life's musical achievements.
The 5th Jean-Marie LONDEIX International Saxophone (JMLISC) Competition will be held from July 9-22, 2017 at the College of Music at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. Monsieur Jean-Marie LONDEIX, one of the world's most distinguished concert artists will preside over the jury of esteemed musicians from around the world. The repertoire is distinct for its emphasis on the music of today's composers and those of the recent past.
