When music transcends cultural boundaries and invites audiences to explore the meaning of life through sound

On 12 June 2026, the College of Music, Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Thailand, presented Temple Timbre Transmission, an immersive contemporary music performance at the Marble Tripitaka Hall, Buddhamonthon.

The project was an artistic and academic collaboration between Dr. Piyawat Louilarpprasert, Dean of the College of Music, Mahidol University, and André Mergenthaler, a contemporary artist from Luxembourg. Together, they co-created and performed the work alongside the Mahidol Experimental Ensemble.

Drawing inspiration from Thai post-mortem ritual traditions, the performance reimagined these cultural practices through contemporary music, combining artistic and musical elements to create an immersive experience that connected audiences with themes of spirituality, memory, and life’s transitions.

The project stands as a powerful example of contemporary artistic research rooted in Thai cultural heritage while engaging with global audiences. It also reflects the College’s commitment to serving as a platform for international exchange in music, culture, and creative scholarship.

The College extends its sincere appreciation to the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Thailand and H.E. Mr. Patrick Hemmer, Ambassador of Luxembourg to Thailand, for their generous support and collaboration. Special thanks are also extended to Mr. Alfonso Martin, CEO of Sonos Libra, a valued partner of the College, for supporting the sound system that helped create a truly immersive listening experience. We also gratefully acknowledge Mr. Jessada Cheevawichawalakul, Inspector General of the Ministry of Culture, and the National Office of Buddhism for their support of this project.

More than a performance, this evening became a dialogue between cultures—a transmission of ideas, beliefs, and shared humanity through the universal language of music.
