Jazz Audition Requirement;

The requirements are divided into 3 parts: Repertoire, Sight Reading and Scales.

1. Repertoire – Choose one piece from the following list

  • Bessie’s Blues by John Coltrane
  • Billie’s Bounce by Charlie Parker
  • Blue Monk by Thelonious Monk
  • Lady Bird by Tadd Dameron
  • Now’s The Time by Charlie Parker
  • Pent Up House by Sonny Rollins
  • Tenor Madness by Sonny Rollins
  • Tune Up by Miles Davis
  • Honeysuckle Rose by Thomas “Fats” Waller, Andy Razaf

Play melody at least one chorus (Head-in). After melody, applicant must play at least one chorus of soloing (two or more choruses for Blues). If applying for Piano or Guitar, applicant must play at least one chorus of comping (accompaniment) after their solo. If applying for Drum set, applicant must play a “trading fours” solo at least one chorus (two or more choruses for Blues) . Play melody again for one chorus (Head-out).

*The chosen piece will be played with accompaniment (must be prepared by the applicant) or with a good quality backing track

2. Sight Reading – Applicant has to read and perform in a swing feel with a metronome set to sound on beats 2 and 4, tempo 40-50 bpm

3. Scales – Scale of all Major, Harmonic Minor, Jazz Melodic Minor and Natural Minor should be played in eight notes using a swing feel with a metronome sounding on beats 2 and 4, tempo 60 bpm.

*** Note: Applicant must play everything from memory

The recordings must be divided into 3 separated files, (based on all the requirements above) including;
File no. 1 – Repertoire
File no. 2 – Transcription [Download Link]

Applicant chooses one from provided transcriptions, plays with metronome clicking on beat 2 and 4 no slower than 60 bpm.
– Piano: Blues by Five (Red Garland) or Bye Bye Black Bird (Red Garland)
– Guitar: Gone With the Wind (Wes Montgomery, only First Chorus) or Satin Doll
– Drums: Tadd’s Delight (Philly Joe Jones) and Single Stroke Exercise
– Bass: Woody’n You (Bass line by Paul Chambers)
– Trumpet & Trombone: Oleo (Miles Davis) or So What (Miles Davis)
– Saxophone: Yardbird Suite (Charlie Parker) for Alto and Shiny Stocking (Dexter Gordon) for tenor
*Drum set and Bass must do both transcription and etude

File no. 3 – Technique (play all scales as follow in the keys of F, G, and Bb ) should be played in eight notes using a swing feel with a metronome sounding on beats 2 and 4, tempo 60 bpm.

Scales: Major, Harmonic Minor, Jazz Melodic Minor and Natural Minor
* All transposing instruments (Alto, Tenor, Trumpet, etc) must play all given keys without transposing
For each of the above files, each video recording should be of good quality and taken in one take without any editing.  Each file should be named to include [applicant’s name and last name + File no.].  The applicant’s face and fingers must be visible at all times. *** Note: Applicant must play everything from memory

Thailand International Music Examination: TIME

1. How to apply with the TIME score

In order to study here, prospectus students should obtain a required result of TIME. The applicant will need to apply for TIME for Thai Music theory, Music Theory, and Aural training. Requirement will depend on the major areas of application.

If the applicant did not pass the TIME (<60%), but qualify for other areas, the applicant will be admitted to the college under condition and will be placed in the music foundation course. (entering the first semester, Intensive course in June 2024 or entering the second semester, Intensive course in October 2024).

However, applicant is allowed to re-take TIME and if the result is more than 60%, the applicant can submit the result for an update score (entering the first semester, until 30 April 2024 or entering the second semester, until 30 September 2024)
