Career Highlight

Poonsant Tainchaivanich received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Piano Performance from the Department of Western Music, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University where he was under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tongsuang Israngkun.

During his study, he participated in masterclasses conducted by Andres Werz, Giancarlo Crespeau, Jonas Vitaud and Regina Albrink. He also joined music festivals, masterclasses and seminars both in Thailand and abroad where he appeared as a recitalist, concerto soloist with orchestra as well as chamber and collaborative pianist.

In addition to classical piano repertoire, he is interested in traditional Thai piano literature. He has studied works by Sumitra Sucharitkul and Col. Choochart Pitaksakorn as well as the piano arrangement of traditional Thai music by Prof. Dr. Natchar Pancharoen, in particular.

His interests in traditional Thai music expanded when he joined Piano Solo School of Traditional Thai Music (PSTM), founded by Prof. Dr. Natchar Pancharoen in 2011. In addition to his practice in piano playing on Thai music, he has seriously learnt to play Sorsamsai (Thai three-stringed fiddle). His teachers include Lila Mahavinijchaimontri, Kan Asvasena along with additional guidance from Prof. Dr. Natchar herself. Recently, he has become an active and prominent member of Tipnaree School of Sorsamsai (TS), established by Prof. Dr. Natchar Pancharoen in 2020. He has also played the piano and Sorsamsai regularly as a soloist and a part of Thai String Ensemble and Piano.

In 2019, he made his CD recording debut with “Korphai” Thai String Ensemble and Prof. Dr. Natchar on Sorsamsai in the album “Sadabpin Pleng Siam” Thai String Ensemble and Piano. The album was launched in the same year.

In August 2020, he was invited by Steinway Gallery Bangkok to perform in “The Concert Series”, which was broadcasted on Steinway Gallery Bangkok Facebook Page and YouTube. In this concert series, he performed four masterworks from “Sadabtoy Plengthai”, a collection of traditional Thai music arranged for piano solo by Prof. Dr. Natchar Pancharoen. The programme included Bulan Loyluen, La-or-ong, Khaek Mon Bangkhunprom and Surindrahu. All masterpieces were performed and recorded on the exquisite Steinway and Sons Model B-211 Yew Wood Limited Edition.

In September 2020, he appeared with “Tipnaree” Thai String Ensemble and Piano for the first time in “The Concert Series” produced by Steinway Gallery Bangkok. The performance was broadcasted on Steinway Gallery Bangkok Facebook Page and YouTube. Later in the same month, he was invited to perform with “Tipnaree” again at The Siam Society under Royal Patronage.

In October 2020, he played the piano part in “Rattanakosin Chamber Music Repertoire,” the arrangements of traditional Thai repertoires for chamber music. These chamber works were arranged by Asst. Dr. Pimchanok Suwannathada, including two piano quintets; Khamen Pikaew Samchan Tang Sakawa and Khamen La-or-ong in Thao Variations as well as two duets for cello and piano; Bulan Loyluen and Khamen Pairue. These repertoires were premiered in “Tipnaree and Siam Duriyang Chamber” Concert at Music Hall, Art and Culture Building, Chulalongkorn University.
His latest CD recording was “Rattanakosin Chamber Music Repertoire” which was recorded in December 2020. In this recording, he played with Thailand’s renowned string players; Siripong Tiptan (1st violin), Achima Phattanawerangkul (2nd violin), Miti Wisuthumporn (viola) and Aphichai Leamthong (cello). The album was launched in 2021.

Besides being an active performer, he is also an enthusiastic piano instructor. He taught piano major students and Small Ensemble at the College of Music, Mahidol University from 2012 to 2018. His students received several prizes from piano competitions and scholarships from prestigious music institutes. Not only does he coach college and university piano students, but he also emphasizes on teaching young piano students at Music Campus for General Public, College of Music, Mahidol University (Siam Paragon). He was a member of judging commitee in many distinguished piano and music competitions including the 15th Osaka International Music Competition 2014 (regional round) at College of Music, Mahidol University.

Poonsant is currently the Head of Academy at Music Campus for General Public, College of Music, Mahidol University (Siam Paragon) and a major assistant in general activities of PSTM and TS. Recently, he has enrolled in the doctoral program in Fine and Applied Arts at the Department of Western Music, the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University in academic year 2021.
