The College of Music, Mahidol University, is proud to announce that Dean Dr. Piyawat Louilarpprasert received a major commission from the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation to create a new instrument and piece for the Spaceship Ensemble from the Netherlands!
The commissioned work, “Futuristic Octopus,” is a sound installation for eight players. It utilizes custom-made “tentacle” instruments and kinetic sound objects. Inspired by underwater textures—like bubbling, gurgling, and air pressure—the piece relies entirely on live, immersive performance and Instrumental Building rather than electronics. This creation beautifully merges new instrument design and Sound Installation practices.
“Futuristic Octopus” is prominently featured in November Music, a major Dutch festival celebrating musical diversity. Its inclusion not only showcases the creative power of Mahidol’s faculty but also helps forge world-class networks in modern music and arts. This achievement sets an important example for contemporary Thai artists in pioneering new artistic industries and international exchange. The piece is scheduled for restaging throughout the Netherlands during the 2025-2026 season.
This success reinforces the College’s leadership in global music innovation, creating art that seamlessly links design, sound, and technology.
