Career Highlights

Kyle Fyr began teaching at the College of Music, Mahidol University in 2013 after previously working as Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the University of Northern Colorado (USA). At the Mahidol College of Music he serves as the musicology department chair and the Doctor of Music (D.M.) program chair.

Fyr’s research, which covers a wide variety of music theoretical and musicological topics, has been published in Music Theory Online, Music Theory and Analysis, the Journal of Music History Pedagogy, the Malaysian Journal of Music, and Notes. In addition, he has presented papers at conferences throughout the United States, United Kingdom, and Taiwan.

Fyr is also an active teacher, every semester teaching a number of graduate courses on topics such as Western music research, music history since 1900, early music, counterpoint, piano literature, musicology pedagogy, music theory pedagogy, and Western music theory review, while also teaching keyboard literature for piano performance majors at the Bachelor’s level. He has also served as a thesis and dissertation advisor for dozens of Master’s and doctoral students, helping a number of his advisees publish their work in journals throughout Thailand and Southeast Asia.

Dr. Fyr earned a Ph.D. and M.M. in music theory from Indiana University (USA) after earning an M.M. in piano performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (USA). His dissertation focused on piano works of John Adams and he has performed Adams’s piano music on numerous recitals. While pursuing his graduate studies at Indiana University, he also received a dissertation fellowship and an award for outstanding teaching.
