The Composition and Theory Department of the Mahidol University College of Music serves the pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate programs by offering a thorough curriculum in composition, theory, analysis, and contemporary music topics. The program provides students at each level with the tools to achieve as composers, performers, educators, and researchers. In addition to the BM, MM, and DM concentrations in Composition and Theory, the department offers required courses in theory and aural skills to all majors. The department also provides advanced topics in composition, orchestration, counterpoint, electro-acoustic music, theory, form, pedagogy, theory history, contemporary music, and analysis as elective courses for students in all concentrations. Graduates of our program receive the foundation to succeed as educators, flourish as composers, and engage with musical research in refreshing and interesting ways. Former students have graduated to pursue further education at the Royal Academy of Music, UC Berkley, City University of New York, New England Conservatory, Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory, and many other renowned institutions throughout the world.
As host of the Thailand International Composition Festival since 2012, the Composition and Theory Department hosts renowned composers and performers from throughout the world each year. In addition, the department hosts the Young Thai Artist Award (music category), which brings together the leading young voices in composition in Thailand. In the past, the Composition and Theory program has hosted other renowned events, such as the Goethe Institute, Young Composers of SE Asia Competition and Workshop. The department also offers the MU Composition Studio Prize, an internal composition available to current students.
