October 3-5, 2014: Happy End

Music Theatre Department, College of Music, Mahidol University Presents
Happy End
~ A Melodrama with Songs, and a Touch of Comedy~

Book by Dorothy Lane
Music by Kurt Weill
Lyrics by Bertolt Brecht
English adaptation by Michael Feingold

3rd - 5th October 2014
Alliance Française Bangkok, Wireless Road

Synopsis for Happy End.

When work becomes too stressful or your family faces problems, what better way to escape than by sitting in a dark room with friends and strangers to watch a musical comedy? This year, Music Theatre , College of Music, Mahidol University will bring you to Chicago in the 1920s, where liquor is prohibited and the city is taken over by capitalism and gangsters. A gangster from the wrong side of town falls for a sweet doll who convinces him he has a heart. They sing, they dance, they fight, but all ends well -- a nice break from real life. But is the world we left behind outside the theater really any less artificial than the world of the play? Is the company you work for really any different from a gang of Chicago crooks looking to take as much money from as many people as possible? Is the Salvation Army’s propaganda similar to any other propaganda? You’ll have to find all of this out in “Happy End”, a melodrama with songs, and a touch of comedy, with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Bertolt Brecht. Come join the fun and hear tuneful songs that you might know such as “Surabaya Johnny” and “The Bilbao Song”. I don’t know if the musical would bring you joy or grief, but I can assure you that it will be hilarious and FANTASTIC, beyond belief !!
