Dr. Paul Cesarzyk, head of the classical guitar department and DM program chair, gave three successful performances and teaching sessions in India from May 1-8, 2018. The events were organized by the Indian Guitar Federation (IGF) in partnership with several arts oriented institutions including the Margaret Shishak School of Music at Patkai College and the Nagaland Classical Guitar Society in Dimpaur, the Music Academy in Kohima, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
Dr. Paul performed three short recitals that also featured local guitarists in supporting roles in Dimapur and Kohima (Nagaland State) and at the Jewaharlal Nehru Dance Academy in Imphal (Manipur). Master classes and extended workshops were also held in each location.
This was the fourth annual collaboration between Dr. Cesarczyk and the IGF, which aims to raise the standard of performance and pedagogy on the classical guitar throughout India. The non-for-profit IGF was founded by Avik Saha to provide a platform for musical exchange and dialogue. Its initiatives also include the Calcutta International Guitar Festival and the IGF Training Center.
IGF also featured teacher-training workshops with Dr. Cesarczyk in Goa in 2015, Sri Lanka in 2016, and Kolkata in 2017.
The concerts featured works by Narvaez, Reys, Giuliani, Sor, and Mertz. The workshops covered a diverse range of topics on guitar technique and musical communication.
