TPO 10th Anniversary Concert

Date(s) - 18/09/2015 - 19/09/2015

Prince Mahidol Hall

The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) celebrates ten years of outstanding music making as pianist Martin Kasik joins Chief Conductor Gudni Emilsson and the TPO in a performance of Frederic Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Richard Wagner’s “Tannhauser” Overture, and Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche.
As a soloist, Martin Kasik has appeared with, among other orchestras, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, or Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked regularly with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, which he accompanied on their tours of the United States and Japan. This is Martin Kasik’s debut concert with TPO.
Chopin composed his piano concerto at age twenty, a piece full of youthful bravado and technical display yet also featuring beautiful melodies that were atypical for concertos of the time.  Chopin was himself a dazzling performing pianist but was also a private person, and this concerto reflects his unique mix of virtuosity and introspection.
Wagner’s opera Tannhauser is partially set in historical Germany, but also partially set in the mythological land of Venusberg. The plot is based on legendary song contests and the characters’ redemption through love.  The overture from the opera has since become a widely popular orchestral piece in its own right.
Finally, Strauss’s tone poem tells the story of the German folk hero Till Eulenspiegel and his “merry pranks.”  This rowdy, humorous piece features a virtuosic melody for the French horn, and tells the tale of the legendary trickster and his many adventures.
This festive program is a wonderful way to celebrate the TPO’s 10th anniversary!
