Prince Mahidol Hall

For both Mahler and Shostakovich the symphony was a depository of innermost feelings and private thoughts. Deciphering either is no easy task, especially in the Russian’s Ninth with its witty sarcasm and understated tones. In contrast, Mahler’s Fourth is dream-like and mysterious. The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes the stunning soprano Pijarin Wiriyasakdakul to stamp the final movement with exalted solemnity.

Special thanks to Andreas Franke of Franke Violin Shop in Bangkok for the violin on loan to the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra for use by the concertmaster on this program.

Synopsis:

For both Mahler and Shostakovich, the symphony was a depository of innermost feelings and private thoughts. Deciphering either in no easy task, especially in the Russian’s Ninth with its witty sarcasm and understated tones. In contrast, Mahler’s Fourth is dream-like and mysterious. The Thailand Phil welcomes the stunning soprano Pijarin Wiriyasaldakul to stamp the final movement with exalted solemnity. Well-known to TPO regulars, Pijarin is a multi prize-winner in international competitions.

For many music lovers Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is the gateway to a life-long admiration for the composer’s few but titanic orchestral works. It’s among the shortest of Mahler’s works and the inclusion of the human voice brings the artist and audience into a temporary but spiritual connection.

In contrast, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, composed at the conclusion of World War II is classically simple but also genuinely emotional satisfying. It will be the task of chief conductor Alfonso Scarano to bring these two separate musical journeys into one magnificent listening experience.
