Dean of the College of Music had the honor to receive the donation of a special Thai instrument – “Kim Rambai Prapa”

16 July 2020 – Dr.Narong Prangcharoen, Dean of the College of Music, Mahidol University had the honor to receive the donation of a special Thai instrument – “Kim Rambai Prapa”, presented to the College from ML Poomchai Choompon by his representative, Mrs. Kathleen Pokrud, President of Hong Kong Ladies Group.

The Kim instrument was created to honor the memory of Her Highness Princess Rambai Prapa, a senior member of the Chakri Dynasty. The piece was hand-crafted as a replica to the original piece played by HH Princess Rambai Prapa. She was born in 1907 and was the youngest daughter of HRH Prince Bhanurangsri สมเด็จพระราชปิตุลาบรมพงศาพิมุข เจ้าฟ้าภาณุรังษี สว่างวงศ์ who was a son of HM King Mongkut Rama IV and HM Queen Thepsirin. She was also a royal niece of HM King Chulalongkorn and therefore a first cousin of HRH Prince Mahidol (grandfather of the present Majesty) – whom Mahidol University is named after. When Princess Rambai’s father passed away she came to be in the care of her other first cousin – HM King Prachadhipok Rama VII and while living at the Royal Court she became a member of the Royal Thai Court Orchestra where she displayed great talents in music.

The Kim Rambai Prapa will be placed in the Southeast Asia Music Museum collection. The College is honored to have this donation and hopes to preserve the legacy of the Thai Royal family’s long association with Thai traditional music performance.
