Chamber Music Masterclasses with Professor Michael Bochmann

Chamber Music Masterclasses at the College of Music,

Mahidol University, Thailand

with Professor Michael Bochmann from Trinity Laban

Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London, UK

16 November – 20 November 2015

The recently signed “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU) between the College of Music, Mahidol University, Thailand, and Trinity Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London, UK, was filled with life, music and human interaction during the week 16 – 20 November 2015.

Michael Bochmann, Professor for Violin and Chamber Music at Trinity Conservatoire gave masterclasses for string quartets and piano trios, as well solo violin and viola coachings, and also worked with the Salaya Chamber Orchestra.

The week was well filled from the moment of Michael’s touchdown in Bangkok on Monday 16 November , with masterclasses and rehearsals starting soon after his arrival. There was always some audience listening to the coachings. Many string students, string players of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, young conductors, string faculty and outside members of the public took the opportunity to observe the masterclasses.

A great time was had by all. The students profited a lot and took many lessons and insights on board. The effect of the masterclasses on the students was instantly noticeable in many ways, above all of course audible, but also visible, and tangible in a sense of heightened energy, confidence and deepened connection between themselves and the music they were playing and their ensemble colleagues. Also various members of the string and chamber music department faculty – violinists, violists, cellists and pianists- got involved in Michael’s work during this week, listening to the coachings, the concert, the rehearsals, and engaging with Michael in deep conversations about music, human interaction, listening, performing, reaching out to new audiences, cultural exchange, teaching, learning, differences and similarities between Thailand and the UK, instrumental, psychological, philosophical issues of music-making, and many more topics.

Warm contact was established between Michael and many key figures at the College of Music Mahidol University, such as Dr Paris Paraschoudis (String and Chamber Music Department Chair), Dr Joe Bowman (Associate Dean for International Relations), Linda Cheng (Associate Dean for Marketing and Public Relations) or Richard Ralphs (Head of the Pre-College). Many thanks go towards the organizing teams both at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, headed by Laura Matthews, and at the College of Music, Mahidol University, headed by Khun Sarawut, as well as to the Deans of both institutions: Dr Claire Mera-Nelson of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

Dr Sugree Charoensook of the College of Music, Mahidol University. A continuation of this artistic collaboration between our two institutions would be highly welcomed from everyone her at the College of Music Mahidol University in Thailand.
