4th Thailand International Piano Competition Finals

College of Music Mahidol University recently held the 4th Thailand International Piano Competition in partnership with Siam Music Yamaha Company and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra on November 15-21, 2015 at the Mahidol Salaya Campus. The 14 contestants, aged from 15-27 from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand passed through the tape round and then were judged by our prestigious judges from Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Austria and Singapore. Students and contestants had the opportunity to attend masterclasses and a recital by the judges.

The highlight is the final round where the five finalists play their chosen concertos including Beethoven, Lizst, Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Guest Conductor Alfonso Scarano. TPO Fans came out in full force to give support to these young musicians at the magnificent Prince Mahidol Hall and after two days of impressive performances by all the finalists, our judges delivered the following results:

1st: Ting-Chia Hsu (Taiwan)

200,000 Baht, a Yamaha Grand Piano C3X, Concerto performance with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016-17

2nd: Hannah Shin (South Korea)

100,000 Baht

3rd: Aleksandra Chekmak (Russia)

70,000 Baht

4th: Kevin Chow (Australia)

40,000 Baht

5th: Margaret Kong (Australia)

25,000 Baht

Best étude: Hannah Shin, 12,000 Baht

Best Classical Sonata: Ting-Chia Hsu, 12,000 Baht

Best Romantic piece: Rhythmie Wong, 12,000 Baht

Best 20th Century: Aleksandra Chekmak, 12,000 Baht

Audience prize: Hannah Shin, 10,000 Baht
